Columbia Heights said in a Facebook post that Xcel Energy is implementing temporary protections for customers affected by recent events. According to the post, the company extended a suspension of service disconnections to all seven metro-area counties through the end of February, effective Feb. 5.
Customers do not need to contact the company to receive disconnection protection, but bills will continue to accrue during the suspension. The post stated that customers seeking flexible payment arrangements or energy assistance can call 800-895-4999.
According to the post, Xcel Energy offers one late payment charge forgiveness per year upon request. Customers who indicate they have been affected by immigration operations may request late fee removal by calling the same number.
The post also stated that customer service agents have been instructed to treat immigration actions, safety concerns and loss of income as extenuating circumstances, allowing for more flexible payment arrangements, including down payments below the usual 10%.
In addition, the company is suspending removals from percent-of-income affordability payment plans, under which customers are typically removed after missing two payments, according to the post.
